There are 5 game modes:

1. Live Mode
2. Buy Mode
3. Build Mode
4. Story Mode
5. Options

[edit] Live Mode

Live Mode (also accessible by using the F1 key) is the mode in which the actual gameplay takes place.

[edit] Buy Mode

Buy Mode (also accessible by using the F2 key) is the mode in The Sims 2 in which you are allowed to buy furniture and other objects for your home.

[edit] Build Mode

Build Mode (also accessible by using the F3 key) allows you to make all the permanent changes to the house (ones that will not change if a sim were to move out, if there were a fire, etc.).

Story Mode (also accessible by using the F4 key) is where you can edit the photographs you or your sims have taken.

The Options (also accessibe by using the F5 key) is where you can change the look-and-feel of the game, view the credits, and access the game tips encyclopedia (not available until OFB is installed)
