Fire is a big problem with sims, especially in The Sims. A fire most often happens when a Sim with 0 Cooking Skill attempts to cook.

When a Sim tries to cook for the first time, it usually ends in tragedy: either the food (most likely a Toaster Pastry) is burned or, if the timer's beep is ignored, the appliance catches on fire.
